Dr Glenn R. Willey BDS (Syd) Grad Dip Clin Dent (Oral Implants) FPFA
Dr Glenn Willey was born in Sydney Australia and was educated at Trinity Grammar School. He received a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney in 1981. After graduation he was one of 6 new graduates to be accepted into a pilot intern/registrar program at the newly opened Westmead Hospital Dental Clinical School. During his 3 years at Westmead he gained valuable experience in the areas of restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral surgery, accident and emergency and orthodontics. Significantly he was able to learn from greats of the dental profession of the era including Keith Lester, Robert Carter, Geoffrey Stacey and Eric Bevan.
In 1984 Dr Willey accepted a position in the Department of Orthodontics at the Sydney Dental Hospital to further his skills in orthodontics.
In 1985 he purchased the practice of D William Gale in Burwood, NSW. The practice was at the time, a thriving suburban general practice, however Dr Willey recognised that there was a need for being able to offer more advanced treatment that was then currently available.
Beginning with 4 staff including Dr Gale, the practice developed of over the years out growing 3 premises and to a staff of over 20.
In 1989 Dr Willey attended the first course offered by the University of Sydney in the field of dental implants and began offering this revolutionary new treatment at his practice soon after. He was one of the first 6 dentists to be invited to enrol in the inaugural Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants) program graduating in 1994.
In order to develop his knowledge, Dr Willey has attended countless courses, conferences and residencies of over the years. Notable amongst these were residency programs with Dr Patrick Pallacci in Marseilles, France and the Malo Clinic in Lisbon, Portugal.
With the growing demand for dental implant treatment in the 1990’s he established the Inner West Dental implant Centre alongside the general practice and by 2000 he had restricted his clinical practice to dental implants and prosthodontics.
Dr Willey is active in all areas of the dental implant treatment and in particular is one of the more experienced providers of the All-on-4 protocol in the world. He has placed and restored more than 4000 implants.
In addition to his clinical interests Dr Willey has maintained a keen interest in teaching. From 1985 to 1993 he held part time visiting teaching positions at the Sydney Dental Hospital and Westmead Dental Clinical School tutoring undergraduate students in restorative dentistry and prosthodontics.
He was an honorary lecturer for the University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants) program and has lectured for various dental company sponsored courses and conferences. This included the prestigious Nobel Biocare World Tour in Sydney Australia in 2006. He continues to lecture with Nobel Biocare in dental implant treatment. He has also lectured and run workshops in dental practice management.
In addition he has run mini residencies at his facility as well as regularly providing one on one mentoring.
Dr Willey’s practice was amongst the first in Australia to enrol in a comprehensive practice management program at the time run by Dr Phillip Palmer under the banner of The Pride Institute. This prompted a keen interest in dental practice management and in particular the value of effective communication skills.
In conjunction with Ms Randi Ghoda, the then CEO of Momentum Practice Management, he co-wrote and presented workshops in advanced presentation skills for dentists and their staff.
Dr Willey has maintained his close association with Dr Palmer and Prime Practice Management and includes aspects of PrimeSpeak in his presentations.
Dr Willey has embraced technology and innovation in his career. Areas where he was among the first to be involved with:
- – He introduced computers into his practice in the late 80s.
- – His practice was virtually completely paperless by the mid 90’s.
- – He was the second practice in Sydney to introduce digital radiography.
- – He purchased one of the first OPG x ray machines in the mid 1980’s.
- – He upgraded his practice’s radiographic capability to include a cone beam computed tomography in the mid 2000’s.
- – He was among the first dentists in Australia to be regularly involved in implant dentistry in the early 90’s.
- – He was one of the first dentists in Australia to introduce the All-0n-4 implant protocol in 2005.
- – Dr Willey’s team was the first in Australia to introduce new generation all ceramic crowns and then CAD CAM milled zirconia restorations.
- – He was one of a very small number of general dentists to routinely provided full orthodontic treatment to his patients.
- – He has been a leader in introducing hospital standard infection control procedures into dental practice.
In 2017 he decided to move on from full time private practice to set up a consultancy organisation that provides both clinical and practice management services to dentists and dental practices. It also allows him to devote more time to teaching and mentoring.
Also in 2017 Dr was awarded an horary fellowship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy for services to the dental profession.
Dr Willey’s unique blend of experience and training puts him at the forefront of his profession.
Away from dentistry Dr Willey is a keen adventure traveler, scuba diver and musician.
