Part 1: Dental Appointment

What is included In a New Patient Examination?

Dedicated 60 Minutes with Dentist

New patients will be booked in for a New Patient Examination. No treatment will be carried out at this appointment, unless previously arranged, such as in the case of emergency appointments.

Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment

We will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and oral tissues. This comprehensive examination often includes photographs and x-rays, and sometimes a model of your mouth.

Detailed Medical History

We will gather a detailed medical history, including your digestive health, immune function, and breathing patterns. This helps us understand any underlying issues that may affect your oral health.

Digital X-Rays

We take low-dose digital X-rays to check the bone levels around your teeth. This allows us to look for signs of disease or decay that are not visible on the surface and examine wisdom teeth.

Oral Cancer Screen

Oral cancer (also known as mouth cancer) can affect any part of the oral cavity, including the lips, tongue, gums, floor and roof of the mouth. This check is a routine part of a dental examination.

Assessing Next Steps

Based on your needs, a tailored treatment plan will be presented and discussed in detail (if any treatment is required). We can utilise digital smile design to assist in cosmetic treatment planning if needed.

Part 2: Oral Hygiene Appointment

Good oral health starts with good oral hygiene.

At Dental Fresh, we will show you how to best protect your teeth. During your first visit, your oral health therapist/hygienist will demonstrate the proper techniques for brushing and flossing to ensure you are effectively caring for your teeth and gums.

We will also professionally clean your teeth, removing any plaque or tartar deposits. Regular visits help detect and address any issues early, making treatments simpler and more effective. Practicing good oral hygiene habits daily will help prevent future dental problems and keep your teeth in great shape. This is the starting point for us – giving you the tools you need to prevent future dental issues.

Common Questions about your first visit to Dental Fresh

What Should you expect in your first Consultation?

During your initial visit, we will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and oral tissues. This comprehensive examination often includes photographs and x-rays, and sometimes a model of your mouth. If additional tests are needed, we may schedule a follow-up appointment.

You will receive detailed quotations for all necessary diagnostic records, which help us make informed diagnostic and treatment decisions with you. Should further treatment be required, we will clearly explain all possible options in detail after thoroughly reviewing your data. This discussion may take place during a separate appointment.

Together, we will develop a final treatment plan, ensuring you are fully informed and have a clear say in the outcomes. At your first visit, you will complete a medical and dental health questionnaire. This information is held in strict confidence and is used to assist us in diagnosis and treatment planning, ensuring your safety.

We aim to make every visit to Dental Fresh one that you actually look forward to.

What is included In a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment?

A comprehensive oral health assessment at Dental Fresh includes:

  • Pain Evaluation: Identifying any pain, as most dental infections can occur without pain.
  • Gum Health: Checking for bleeding gums, which indicate inflammation and potential periodontal disease linked to systemic health risks.
  • Chewing Comfort: Assessing your ability to chew comfortably.
  • Sensitivity to Cold: Investigating cold sensitivity, often related to bite issues or clenching/grinding.
  • Sensitivity to Heat: Addressing heat sensitivity, which may indicate chronic inflammation within the tooth’s nerve.
  • Fillings and Materials: Examining existing fillings for leaks or decay, especially older metal mercury fillings that can corrode and crack teeth.
  • Root Canal Treatments: Using 3D cone beam X-rays to check for underlying infections in root canal-treated teeth.
  • Dental Anxiety: Providing support for anxious patients to ensure a relaxed and comfortable treatment experience.
  • Cosmetic Services: Discussing options for teeth whitening, cosmetic dentistry, and Invisalign if desired.

This thorough assessment helps us understand your dental health and plan appropriate treatments tailored to your needs.

What is included In a Detailed Medical History?

During your first appointment at Dental Fresh, we take the opportunity to gather a detailed history to better understand your overall health and its impact on your oral health. Here are some key areas we focus on:

  • Digestion and Oral Health: Your digestive health can significantly affect your oral health. Issues like reflux, heartburn, or indigestion increase susceptibility to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Immune Function: The gut reflects the body’s immune function. A compromised immune system can make you more prone to oral and systemic health problems.
  • Breathing Patterns: Whether you are a mouth breather or a nasal breather can impact both your general and oral health. Snoring and sleep-disordered breathing are also considered.
  • Teeth Grinding or Clenching: Grinding or clenching your teeth at night often indicates sleep-disordered breathing, affecting 70-80% of cases.
  • Morning Symptoms: Waking up with headaches, neck, or jaw aches can be linked to dental issues, which holistic dentistry can help address.
  • Sleep Quality: Ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed is crucial, as sleep is the most important part of the day.

This comprehensive history helps us tailor our care to your specific needs, ensuring the best possible outcomes for your oral and overall health.
