Why Start Early?

The Science Behind Children’s Dental Milestones

Did you know?
One in three children aged 5–6 already has decay in their baby teeth, and one in four children aged 6–14 has decay in their adult teeth.

The good news?
Our children’s dental team is here to help. Early intervention can prevent dental problems before they start.

Preventive care
Can set your child up for a lifetime of good oral health and overall wellbeing, and help avoid costly treatments in the future.

Regular hygiene visits
These represent one of the most cost-effective health investments you can make for your family.

When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

The Australian Dental Association recommends a first visit by age 1 or when the first tooth erupts.

Common Parent Dental
Questions & Concerns

My child is anxious about the dentist – what can you do?

We understand completely. Our approach includes gradual introductions to care, distraction tools and calm child-friendly language, plus full parent involvement throughout each step.

Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?

Yes – baby teeth are crucial for chewing, speech development, smiling, and holding space for adult teeth. Losing them early due to decay can cause lasting problems.

How can I spot a dental problem early?

Watch for white or dark spots on teeth, avoiding certain foods or brushing, and complaints of pain or bad breath. When in doubt, give us a call – early treatment is always easier than emergency care.

My child sucks their thumb – should I be worried?

Thumb sucking is normal until age 3-4. If it continues past age 4 or affects tooth alignment, we can provide gentle strategies to help break the habit.

When will my child’s teeth fall out?

Most children lose their first tooth around the age of 6, typically starting with the lower front teeth. The process usually continues until age 12. Significant variation is normal.

Should we be concerned about sports injuries?

Yes – 1 in 3 dental injuries occur during sports. Custom mouthguards provide far better protection than store-bought options and are essential for contact sports.

How do I know if my child needs braces?

We may recommend an orthodontic evaluation if there are concerns. Early signs include crowding, crossbites, protruding teeth, or difficulty chewing. Early intervention often reduces complexity later.
